3 Tips to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile Immediately
September 20, 2016
LinkedIn is no longer just the social media you use to find a job. It is now easily one of the most powerful tools business developers have to find, connect and network with colleagues and potential clients.
Many people want to use LinkedIn, but don't necessarily know where to start. Here's three ways you can truly optimize LinkedIn for your career...like right now!
1. Update your personal URL
Did you know that you can change your URL to your page? You can. As a matter fact, you can do it easily. You can change it by following these steps:
Login to LinkedIn
Navigate to your personal profile
Hover over your URL left adjusted underneath your profile picture (see picture above)
Click the gear icon to the right of the URL
On your public profile page, edit your URL in the top right of the page by clicking the pencil
This makes you easier to find on search engines because Google can actually read it. Having a personalized URL is also much easier to share when you want to connect with someone new.
2. Sync Your Contacts from Microsoft Outlook and other email applications
Developing your network can be a slow and gradual process, but it doesn't have to initially. You can start from your contact list in your email application. For most, those contacts lives in Outlook. Follow the steps below to export a CSV file from Outlook to LinkedIn:
Select “Import and Export” from the File menu
When the wizard opens, select “Export to a file” and click the “Next” button
Select “Comma separated values (Windows)” and click the “Next” button
Select the Contacts folder you would like to export and click the “Next” button
Choose a filename and a place to save the file (for instance, “Contacts.csv” on the Desktop) and click the “Next” button
Confirm what you are exporting: make sure the checkbox next to “Export…” is checked and click the “Next” button
To upload the file to LinkedIn, on the main page, hover over the My Network tab on the top menu bar and select Add Contacts. On that page (shown below), simply click the “Import File” button and choose your newly-exported CSV file. Then click the “Upload Contacts” button.
If you are using Gmail, Hotmail, AOL or Yahoo mail to import contacts, you can easily upload them on the Add Contacts page as well.
3. Endorse Your Connections
Nothing validates your skills quite like an endorsement from colleagues. However, instead of asking others to endorse you, there's another way.
When you endorse others, people usually return the favor. When people endorse you, the more your expertise is validated for those that do not know you - like potential clients.
You do this by visiting one of your colleague's pages and scrolling down to their skills section. By clicking on the plus icon next to the skill, you endorse them.
So that's that. There's three ways you can optimize your LinkedIn profile immediately!
